Dogs In The Night

What do you hear outside your window?

Waking up to the lively barking of neighborhood dogs, their conversations seemed endless. Josh (younger brother) and I were home together while our parents were away. Suddenly, darkness enveloped the house, muting the world outside, and the sky unveiled a tapestry of stars. Josh explained a phenomenon called load shedding, where electricity is shared between neighborhoods. “Right now, we’re sharing ours with someone else,” he said. We exchanged glances, wondering how long this would last.

Gradually, we made our way to the living room, our hands guiding us through the shadows. We greeted the wooden piano, a familiar presence against the wall. Sitting side by side on the long rectangular bench, Josh’s fingers danced over the pale keys, filling the silence with music. I closed my eyes, allowing the notes to wash over me like a gentle rain, giving our home a voice once more.

Speciate thanks to my little brother Josh Zulu, the pianist and Afraaz Mulji producer of “dogs backwards in the night”.
